I found this week to be some what hopeful for everyone who thought teams in the AFC seemed to have a hammer lock on the positions they were in. The Steelers who everyone thought looked unbeatable scrapped by the dolphins, the Ravens who seemed to be the second best team in the AFC needed over time to beat the worst team in the NFL the Bills. With that being established it proved more over that the Patriots are pretenders in that the win over Baltimore doesn’t seem as impressive as well as barely getting by the now 2-5 Chargers and the Chargers spotted them 3 free turnovers and the Patriots still narrowly escaped with a win. We also saw the Titans continued to assert the AFC south’s dominance over the NFC east with a win over the Eagles. Last but not least we saw that the “state of the AFC” is much stronger then the “state of the NFC” with the Browns blow out victory over the defending Superbowl Champion Saints. The Texans travel to Indianapolis Monday night to take on the Colts in the team’s second meeting of the year that can have long term ramifications in the AFC south and the AFC in general. The only other match up of note this weekend is the Packers at the Jets this would be the banner match up if not for the decimation on injuries the Packers have had this year. But all in all this should be a strong week of football on Halloween.




AFC OPINION OF THE WEEK

The dolphins got robbed, plain and simple. For those of you who didn’t see the game the Steelers tried a quarterback sneak to get in to the end zone on Sunday. As Roethlisberger attempted to cross the goal line he was hit in the arm and fumbled in to the end zone the dolphins clearly came out of the pile with the ball but it was ruled a touchdown. When the official review was completed they ruled that Roethlisberger had in fact fumbled however because on the official review they couldn’t determine who ended up with the ball they awarded the ball to the Steelers on the half yard line and from there they kicked the game winning field goal. I don’t care if the call on the field is what the rule book states it doesn’t make any sense I don’t even understand how this is the rule but the fact of the matter is the dolphins clearly recovered the ball and from there they could have ran down the clock and won the game this is the second week in a row I’ve had to dedicate this segment to a team losing due to a questionable call. I hope the NFL doesn’t wait for the off season to change this rule I’d hate to see a playoff game determined like this……by the way the tuck rule is b.s.

State of the NFC Week 8

The whole NFC remains tight but with the Giants winning at Dallas they are widely considered the team to beat in the NFC. With a win this weekend this weekend at Arizona the Bucs can force a tie for first in the NFC south heading into a matchup between the two in Atlanta next week. The 49ers are going to go with Troy Smith at quarter back.

Injuries

• Brett Favre’s consecutive games played streak is in danger because of two fractures in his ankle. He doesn’t need surgery and playing on it won’t cause any more damage so he isn’t ruled out just yet.
• DeAngelo Williams missed practice with a foot injury that was sustained Sunday vs the 49ers
• Max Hall is ok to practice and play but it depends on how he performs in practice that will decide if he plays.
• The Bucs could be missing three starters along the offensive line this weekend Trueblood, Faine and Vincent.

Joe Maass: Ehhh So much is different from when they played to start the season. The key to this rematch will be Brian Cushing and how he will adjust to playing MLB. He will be responsible for making all the calls and adjustments pre-snap. Manning has the ability to pick apart the best the NFL has to offer and Houston’s pass defense is terrible. The Colt’s are hurting on offense with Dallas Clark and Austin Collie out for this game it will make running the offense as usual a little difficult. I expect the Colts to move the ball at will and put up points as usual because they’ll still have the one piece that isn’t replaceable and that’s the quarterback Peyton Manning.


Dr Jamez: There’s a lot to look at here, as Joe Mentioned having someone who one hasn’t played mlb in the NFL versus the greatest football player ever in Manning is a mismatch in the least. But there’s a lot more to the story you’ll see a different colts offense they you have the passed few years you’ll see a lot of 3-4 wide receiver sets but I think with the loss of Clark you will also see more two tight end sets and pounding the running game. But don’t be surprised if you see Peyton take advantage of Cushing playing mlb by using Eldridge (tight end) in the receiving game. The media seems to think Tamme will be replacing Clark and for blocking I think that’s true but The Colts drafted Eldrige for the same reasons they like Clark and think he has potential to be a good receiving tight end. All in all I don’t see how the Colts will have trouble moving the ball, it wasn’t the problem last game and I don’t think it will be this time. Keep in mind The Texans are the 13th ranked run defense and dead last in passing, total yardage, and over all rank. I know that Indy has been last in defense before but they never had to play Peyton Manning and this was before Houston lost the defensive captain and play caller. Contending with Indy’s fans and injuries I don’t see how the Texans will be able to slow the Colts down at all. One last stat to think about, the Colts are leading the league in touchdowns and total points scored.

Dr. Jamez: This is such an important game and there are so many worries and concerns I honestly didn’t know how to start this segment. During the bye week as news of each new injury came in killing my soul the thing I told all my friends to keep reminding me is at least no new injuries came up for the colts defense. Clearly this will be the determining factor in this game. In both games the Colts lost they let the other offenses wear them out and run wild on them. The Colts have played better vs. the run passed few weeks not letting Kansas City, the best rushing attach in the league in the end zone at all. But still the Texans have a much more dynamic offense then the chiefs so the colts could struggle.

Joe Maass: The Colts have done a great job as always in managing the injuries on defense and having Freeny and Mathis go a long way in helping that. Houston has a fantastic rushing attack that is just a complement to the great passing game they have. Many people thought this was the season Schaub would step it up and be considered a top 5 QB, so far in my opinion he hasn’t done that. Clearly Andre Johnson creates matchup problems versus any team and Owen Daniels is starting to be more involved in the passing attack. I expect the Texans to move the ball very easily and dominate the flow of the game to keep Manning on the sideline.




Special Teams

Dr. Jamez: The Colts are in serious trouble here, Punter Pat McAfee is suspended for this game. They brought in a replacement but he’s obviously unproven. Returns have been a serious issue all year due to depth. This is one area the Texans can basically own The Colts but with these two teams it wont really matter too much.

The Bottom Line

Dr Jamez: The Colts must win they can’t drop to 0-3 in the division, they are at home and honestly only one team has beaten Peyton Twice in a season I find it very unlikely that it will happen again.

Joe Maass: The Texans are trying to prove they are a legit playoff contender and what better way to prove this than knocking off the defending AFC champs? Even this early in the season this game could impact how the AFC south looks come week 17. Indy can’t afford to be 2 games behind the Houston Texans with the toughest part of their schedule coming up next.

Offense- Roddy White: 11 catches, 201 yards 2 touchdowns.

All that needs to be said is Roddy had 201 of Matt Ryan’s 299 passing yards. I just don’t understand why defenders keep letting him run by them….


Defense- DeAngelo Hall: seven tackles, four interceptions one for a touchdown.

The guy was all over the field and really is the reason the Redskins won that game. After three wouldn’t you try to throw away from him on purpose?

Offense- Darren McFadden

Good god! I haven’t seen a running back shred a defense like that since……. Week one when Arian Foster did it to the Colts….. McFadden ran for 165+ and four touchdowns in a blowout of the Broncos. Most backs in the NCAA will never have a day this good let alone the NFL.


Defense- David Bowens

There are no words to explain how happy I was to see the Saints get blown out this week, there are even fewer to explain how happy I was the Drew Brees threw four interceptions and every fewer to explain how happy I was when David Bowens, a 265 pound line backer returned two of them for touchdowns and mocked Reggie Bush both times With his endzone celebration. Destroying the Saints and mocking Reggie Bush while doing it , yeah that gets you player of the week.

Game changers week 7

Chris Cooley- Cooley is coming off a mild concussion fully participated on Friday if he does play he can be this weeks game changer. Last week he was being used brilliantly to help block on either end to slow down Freeny and Mathis which is something he isn’t known for. No one has been able to stop Peppers thus far this year so if Cooley can be used to help slow Peppers down it should help the offense be successful.

Anytime someone says they’re going to kill someone I tend to listen to what that person is saying, and that’s just what Gerald McCoy did this week when talking about getting after St. Louis Quarterback Sam Bradford. McCoy is a bit of a goof and was Bradford’s teammate last year at Oklahoma so he is clearly looking forward to hitting the QB he spent so many practices chasing. McCoy, to a lot of people, has underachieved in his rookie campaign and may now just be beginning to feel comfortable. McCoy to date has been worried about playing the correct way that he isn’t being the disruptive force the Bucs envisioned him being and just making plays. For these reasons I have chosen him to be this week’s game changer. I expect McCoy to get his first career sack, while making Bradford uncomfortable all day.

The tight NFC South remains close after a New Orleans win and both the Falcons and Bucs lost. New Orleans found their offense vs. the upstart Bucs and took over the second place spot in the division. Chicago can’t stop anyone from getting into their backfield which is clearly making it difficult for them to have any rhythm or consistency on offense. The Cowboy’s struggles continue and the rumor is that Jon Gruden could be the front runner in taking over as head coach next season. The NFC West in pretty tight with the Cardinals and Seahawks tied for first but even at this point I can’t count the 1-5 49ers out of the division race.

Injuries and such
• The Saints are one step closer to getting Darren Sharper back as he was at practice this week after coming off the PUP list.
• Dunta Robinson and Desean Jackson are both out for this weekend’s games.
• Matthew Stafford back in practice for the Lions and could start next week, this comes at the perfect time due to backup Shaun Hills broken arm.
• Bucs C Jeff Faine still out and G Davin Joseph is day to day.
Matchups and junk
• The 49ers play the Panthers for the right to be last place in the NFC.
• St. Louis running back Steve Jackson has a chan….is going to break the all time team record for rushing yards Sunday vs the Bucs

Marshawn Lynch- He’s always been a great back but legal problems kept him off the field and out of superstar status. Now being the number one back in Seattle he’s a solid starter for any line up -Dr. Jamez

Tony Romo- I know he’s been putting up good numbers so far this year however he’s facing the number one defense in the league that is playing at an extremely high level right now look for him to be hitting the turf quite a bit and putting up more fumbles then normal even for Tony Romo. -Dr. Jamez

MJD- He has underperformed so far and Kansas City has the 5th ranked rush defense. Garrard looks to be missing from this week’s game so look for KC to focus on stopping the run. -Joe Maass

State of the AFC

We learned quite a bit this week in the AFC, we learned the Jets are find ways to win in tough spots the sign of a truly good team. We learned that perhaps the patriots offense might not be as ineffective as many thought. We saw Ben Roethlisberger return to the field and win a game that was closer then it appeared. We saw the Colts score a big road win and dethrone the redskins from the division lead. We also saw the Texans keep the division lead due to some questionable at best penalties and with that send the chiefs and a two game slide.

Quite a few things to address the Biggest (at least to me) is the news that superstar Tight end Dallas Clark has been rumored to have some sort of undisclosed Wrist injury that may require surgery and will sideline him indefinitely and possibly for the rest of the season. As if that wasn’t enough of a hurdle for the Colts to over come news broke Thursday that Austen Collie underwent surgery early in the week and could be out 2-4 weeks this sent most Colts fans in to full on panic mode with the Texans rematch looming on the other side of the bye. Colts fans took another hit on Wednesday when the Colts announced a one game suspension for Colt’s punter Pat MacAfee Who was arrested for a drunk in public charge.


I’m not going to spend a lot of time on the new stricter enforcement when it comes to dirty hits but I will say James Harrison is a piece of garbage for saying he’s going to retire and everyone including his coach Mike Tomlin said he’s just talking junk.

No huge match ups this weekend to speak of but one worth highlighting is what I’m going to deem the hate bowl The Patriots at the Chargers. This game is barely relevant because the chargers have been exposed and are 2-4 so honestly a win for either team won’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things but a win the San Diego would certainly expose the patriots to be the pretenders I believe them to be. But I’ll be honest this game I’ll be watching and hoping the ground opens up and takes both teams back to hell where they belong.

AFC OPINION OF THE WEEK

The Chiefs got screwed, plain and simple. Now, I can’t say for certain that the Texans wouldn’t have found a way to win in the end but if you watch the pass interference call not only did the Kansas City defender not interfere Andre Johnson pushed off of him. So not only was it an egregiously bad call, if anything it was on the wrong guy. What the heck else could the defender have done?! It must make everyone in Chief’s country sick that the have their second loss of the season because of botched refereeing absolutely unacceptable. So that’s your state of the AFC for week 7, I’ll talk to you next week hopefully flying high on Indy beating the Texans

This was a very important game for the Colts in many ways. Going in the Colts were dealing with critics saying that they couldn’t win on the road, they were too injured on defense to stop anyone especially vs. the run where they have historically been weak and I’ll admit those are viable points. Some were answered some were not. Before I break down the defensive issues I’ll address the offense, which no one is concerned with. Now I have to admit like most weeks I expected the Colts to score but this week especially because the Colts were playing a 3-4 Defense and it’s my belief that truly elite Quarterbacks have their way with the 3-4, especially in this situation because it’s a first year 3-4. Imagine my surprise when the Redskins first defer the opening kick off but then when Peyton and the boys take the field the Redskins aren’t coming out in the 3-4, but a prowler defense with one or no down linemen that immediately confuses the offense and the first pass is nearly intercepted. Though, that worked in favor of the ‘skins because had the defensive back caught it, it would have been a fumble that the Colts would have recovered for a first down. The incompletion caused the Colts to punt. On the second offensive series disaster nearly struck again but it would seem the old adage that corners are wide receivers that can’t catch is true for the Redskins because they dropped another bad pass by Manning. From that point on though it was all Colts on offense, Manning Immediately recognized that the Redskins were holding back on forming until late on the play clock to confuse him. So he started quick snapping to both keep the deafening Washington fans out of the play calling and to keep the personnel on they wanted on the field. As Manning fed Addai the ball over and over for his career best in yardage and a career long run in the end Manning had two passing touchdowns and Addai one rushing a great day by any standards and a complete offensive attack.

I wish I could say the same for defense but there were still quite a few issues that can be addressed. However I would prefer to start with the positive most of all being the turnovers. When the Colts were forced to punt on the first series Jerraud Powers made a brilliant interception jumping a quick slant on the first pass of the Redskins drive that resulted in a touchdown. From there as a whole I was very happy with the pass rush getting three sacks on the always dangerous McNabb. Pressure was going to be a huge factor if the colts were to be successful in the game because McNabb has proved for years if you give him time he will find the open man down field. The defense wasn’t all good though while I was impressed with the penetration the colts were getting on passing and running plays they were not wrapping up tackles with the Colts already struggling vs. the run it was heart breaking to see defenders having Torain at a 3-4 yard lass and fail to wrap him up and run for a eight yard gain however for the most part the Colts did a Great job of keeping the Redskins out of the end zone and forcing punts. With the touchdowns that were scored coming off of turnovers. But as has been the case in the past the defense stepped up when needed and created a turnover to win the game. With forty seconds left on the clock and no time outs the ‘skins came out passing on first down with a sixty yard bomb and if not for an immaculate one handed interception by Aaron Francisco they would have scored and took a four point lead with less that thirty seconds on the clock.

To say I was furious about how our special teams played would be like me saying I think the Flash is pretty quick. The punt game was fine and it really will be a shame if MacAfee doesn’t make the Pro-Bowl this year. That being said the Kickoff coverage was completely unacceptable allowing far too many yards. Even that wasn’t a concern compared to the abysmal return game. Not only did the punt return man continually not fair catch balls and let them bounce and be downed shallow of the five yard line but the one punt he did decide to field he fumbled turned it over and ruined a great defensive stand and gave McNabb the ball in the red zone for a go ahead score.

Over all a wins a win and this was a big win over a quality opponent on the road now we go in to a much needed bye at the perfect time to get our starters rested and our injured back to full strength and come back strong for a playoff push to win our division starting with a rematch with the Texans at home.

week 7, Player of the week

Player of the week Dr. Jamez edition

Offense- Peyton Manning honestly I’ll tell you now he’s going to be my player of the year too but more on that later. Coming off a much needed road win in which he put up incredible numbers with two touchdowns, no Interceptions and a 108.1 rating but more importantly he proved why he is the best football player ever his incredible ability to learn adapt and annihilate defenses on the fly during a game. The redskins came out in a prowler style defense in which there were one and at some times no down linemen that was very confusing and they weren’t showing any formation until the last second so what does he do? He starts going in to a two minute offense and not letting the Redskins substitute which keeps all the extra db’s in the game with no rest and proceeds to feed Joseph Addai the ball at a feverish pace in which he posted his career best in both yards and yards in a single run. So yes, Peyton had a good night for most quarterbacks but for him this is his third worst game of the season Peyton is the player of the week for being a field general and making changes that no other quarterback would and setting his team up to win .

Defense- Dunta Robinson is my player of the week, for no other reason then he absolutely crushed Desean Jackson and I hate that guy. I suppose it ended up being an illegal hit but I don’t think it was his intention. He certainly didn’t intend to concuss him self.

8 Texans- The Texans had a chance to be listed high but could fall due to a terrible defense -Joe

9 Packers- Decimated with injuries and killing my superbowl prediction -Jamez

10 Chiefs- Strong defense and a running game is a time tested way to win -Jamez

11 Redskins- Look brilliant at times and blow up at times. Could be dangerous if the can find some consistency on offense -Jamez

12 Eagles- Doesn’t matter who is the qb they're getting it done -Jamez

13 Titans- In the same boat as the colts. Trying to grind to a division crown -Jamez

14 Dolphins- Looked very good until they started playing divisional games -Jamez

15 Saints- Decent record vs a terrible schedule only gets you so far -Jamez

16 Vikings- Would be better if they were starting t.jack -Jamez

17 Jaguars- 3-3 with a big win over Indy and a big loss over Tennessee -Jamez

18 Bears- The Bears are in first in the north and might win the division but they need to find a way to protect Cutler or it could get ugly -Joe

19 Broncos- They are 2-4 but have looked so good -Jamez

20 Cowboys- Something has to change -Jamez

21 Bucs- Looked so good until the saints game, have two big blow outs on their record -Jamez

22 Bengals- The most disappointing team of 2010 -Jamez

23 Seahawks- Coming off a huge victory and they look like they can compete for the weak west title. -Jamez

24 Browns- Good running game and colt McCoy looked very impressive vs the best defense in the league -Jamez

25 Chargers- Exactly what I said they are for years -Jamez

26 Cardinals- Division leaders….. Beat the superbowl champs…… -Jamez

27 Lions- Most unlucky team ever -Jamez

28 Rams- Sam Bradford is clearly a future franchise QB and that’s huge for the Rams

Each week either Joe or I will be tasked with telling each other and the readers why a team they pick against will win the game. This week I picked The Falcons to beat the Bengals so I’m going to tell you why the Bengals will win the game.

First Down- The Bengals are coming off a bye the extra week will allow more time to get the offense on the same page and heal up from some key injuries. Also the bye in most cases this being one lets one team have an extra week of planning for a the other team who has had to play for two teams in that time it’s even more of a factor here because the Falcons just played a huge game vs the Eagles with playoff implications.

Second Down- Offense, offense, offense the Bengals have the 7th best passing offense which is very favorable vs the 24th ranked passing defense and with Dunta Robinson missing this week due to destroying Desean Jackson it could be a coming out party for one of the most talented Wide receiver corps in the nfl.

Third Down- Regardless of stats the Bengals still have a strong defensive core and a very smart defensive coordinator. You can look at the Bengals to lock down Turner and try to make Matt Ryan beat them and with the lack of skill at wide receiver I’d like those chances.
