Weekly Spotlight : Raiders at Steelers

Weekly Spotlight

The Raiders Offense Vs The Steelers Defense

Joe Maass:
The Raiders offense normally wouldn’t match up but with Jason Campbell playing well the past few weeks it really opens up what the Raiders can do. Luis Murphy should be back and Jacoby Ford blew up before the bye. They also have a great running game led by Darren McFadden. Teams have been moving the ball very well through the air on the Steelers in recent weeks but Jason Campbell isn’t Drew Brees or Tom Brady. The Steelers have some playmakers on defense and when Troy Polamalu gets going he can disrupt any game plan.

Dr Jamez: Jason Campbell isn’t Drew Brees or Tom Brady?! Since when?!

The Raiders Defense Vs The Steelers Offense

Dr. Jamez:
The Raiders defense hasn’t been the problem the passed few years. Nnamdi Asomugha will lead a stacked defensive back corps that should have no problem man covering Pittsburgh’s lack luster wide receivers which will easily allow the Raiders to stop Rashard Mendenhall and let Richard Seymour be in Roethlisberger’s stupid sexual assault face all day.

Joe Maass: I’m really not sure how they get a play call in with Ben smelling so bad….

Special Teams

Dr. Jamez: The Steelers had trouble with special team last year, they’ve gotten a bit better in kick and punt coverage but with all the injuries you’re likely to see that decline again. Also this week the Steelers let veteran kicker Jeff Reed take his wife beating duties full time and signed Shaun Suisham who you’ll remember from Washington as the worst kicker ever.

Joe Maass: Jacoby Ford is a weapon in the return game and was able to score in the Raiders last game, he could be a factor.

The Bottom Line

Joe Maass:
The deck does look stacked in the Raiders favor but they are still lining up vs. a very good Steelers football team. It’s clear the injuries along both lines are taking their toll on the Steelers and I think that will continue this week when the Raiders win.

Dr Jamez: I’m surprised anyone is picking the Steelers to win this game. The Raiders are hot right now and coming off a bye I think without those factors normally you could make the case that the Steelers are the better team but with so many question marks I can’t see how Pittsburgh can make it out alive.

Injury Woes: Week 11

Injury Woes: Week 11
Dr. Jamez

The theme of the Colts 2011 season has been “no, no not him too” injuries clearly casting a dark shadow over what was believed to be the team to beat in the AFC this season. Going in to this week’s grudge match with The Patriots who are tied with the conference leading Jets at 7-2 the injury report is as full as ever. The Colts gave their early week list of players that would certainly miss the following week’s game and Colts fans were given a ray of hope in that the only player ruled out for the week was Bob Sanders. However, that ray of hope was diminished greatly when Wednesday the Colts posted the first injury report of the week with every player that missed The Bengals game (Bracket, Session, Tyron, Addai, Hart) missing practice with the exception of Blair White and Austen Collie who were limited with a new addition, Reggie Wayne.

Something more concerning about the report is comments made by Colts President Bill Polian earlier in the week. The verbiage is

An excerpt from Bill Polian’s weekly column

Q: How good are the Patriots?
A: Very good, and most importantly, this game will not decide anything. There is a long way to go in this season. The winner of this game is not guaranteed to go to the Super Bowl, and the loser is not guaranteed to miss the playoffs. It's one game and it's interesting and exciting, but it's only one game with seven to go.

The verbiage is what is important here, if you follow the Colts you’ll remember Polian used similar comments when being asked about the Jets game in which Indianapolis was 14-0 with two games left to complete an undefeated season in 2010. Because the Colts have a full game lead in the division with three divisional games to play two being at home it seems that the staff is likely to keep out the key players for the extra rest because they will most likely win the division so they are guaranteed one home game and aren’t the one seed so will most likely have at least one road game so the feeling is losing to the Patriots who are a wild card team doesn’t actually mean anything in the grand scheme of things. If you’re a rabid Colts fan like Dr. Jamez it’s just a major bummer. I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic though and hope the skill players do come back and save the day. GO COLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weekly Recap:Bengals at Colts

Weekly Recap
Bengals at Colts
Dr. Jamez

It’s sad but true the Colts team that’s taking the field as of right now is not a complete team. Riddled with injuries and more piling up seemingly each week the Colts went in to the Bengals game expecting to not have Austen Collie, Blair White, Joe Addai, Mike Hart, and Brody Eldridge on offense. What wasn’t expected was not having defensive captain Gary Bracket or Clint Session. At game time everyone was left dumbfounded to find Pat Angerer, Phillip wheeler, and Tyjuan Hagler would be Indianapolis’ starting linebackers. Needless to say at kickoff Colts nation was sweating.

The Colts did jump out to a 17-0 lead with to two interceptions one for a touchdown but for anyone who knows Colts football it felt like Indianapolis was losing the whole time. The offense couldn’t run, couldn’t pass, and couldn’t convert third downs. This game was Indianapolis’ season high for punting. Manning was unable to score a passing touchdown for the second time this season, both during the major string of injuries that have recently plagued the team.

The defense did look shockingly good in the beginning of the game that’s more an indictment on Carson Palmer then anything else. Chad Johnson played like a man possessed trying to get back to the high level of production he and the NFL expect from him. T.O. looked to be every bit the perennial Probowler and future hall of famer he is. Ultimately there is almost no way to win a game with five turnovers especially against a team as well coached as the Colts so the Colts would inch by with a 17-23 final score.

What I take away from this game honestly isn’t a good feeling about our teams never say die attitude and “next man up” philosophy it’s a feeling of doom going in to a two game stretch with hated rivals New England and San Diego. The Idea That Indianapolis would cause five turnovers and one not score over 35 but two not score a passing touchdown shows just how crippled the team had become. I’m truly hoping and praying we can get a large majority of our starters back for this New England game.

AFC Player of the Week: Week 11

AFC Player of the Week: Week 11
Dr. Jamez

Offense: Kyle Otron, 296 yards, Four Touchdowns, no interceptions, rating of 131

As is most cases in a blow out both quarterbacks had ridiculous numbers but Orton with a 49-29 victory had the legit stats. Orton looked great and was putting the ball in places only his receivers could get it.

Defense: Kelvin Hayden, nine tackles, one interception, one touchdown.

The rule this year for Hayden has been you catch it, you score. This week it was vital to the win with an ailing offense the Colts needed a full team effort and that’s what they got from the all star corner back.

Dr. Jamez's week in spotlight

Dr. Jamez's week in spotlight

How Dr. Jamez Really feels.

This week’s games are full of crazy match ups and I think this is going to be one of those wild weekends we’ve been having his year because I’m normally pretty good at picking matchups but this week I can see half of what would normally be looks losing. We’ll go game by game on what’s perplexing me and how I went.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta- here’s a game that will probably be a blow out but Tampa is finding ways to win and that’s the only thing that matters. I’ve been totally wrong about them this year and who’s to say that this isn’t the dagger with their sixth win something I said was nothing short of impossible for them this year.

Miami at Baltimore- Baltimore should be a legitimate Superbowl contender with the talent that roster has. But I don’t think they are Ray Rice isn’t running very well. Flacco hasn’t taken that next step everyone thought they would Boldin has been great but the play calling has been so bad they haven’t got maximum efficiency from him.

Chicago at Buffalo- Chicago isn’t very good and the bills have been scratching and clawing for a win every week. This could easily be a 2 score win by buffalo

New England at Cleveland- Honestly this isn’t just me being a hater I thought the Browns looked great in there loss to the Steelers and that was McCoy’s first start versus the best defense in the league. Then they blow out the Saints and McCoy looks like a rock star compared to Brees. The Browns have a good defense, good running game and Mangini knows (and hates) the Pats and this has all the makings of a trap game for New England. I just officially changed my pick to the Browns.

N.Y. Jets at Detroit- The Jets offense is terrible and defense in the Lions strong suit. If Stafford plays like the hero I think he is and finishes this game it could be two upsets in a row.

San Diego at Houston- Neither is too good, and Gates probably isn’t going to play so now that team no good offensive players.

Arizona at Minnesota- this one is hard to pick because WHO FREAKING CARES? The teams are both pointless so who has the will to play hard? Derek Anderson is as good if not better then Favre both defenses aren’t any good so basically it’s the Adrian Peterson show.

Kansas City at Oakland- they’re both playing so well and their strengths play in to each other. So this will come down to Cassel vs. Campbell…..?!

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati- Carson Palmer sucks but the Steelers can’t handle a good passing game. It’s in the division so that’s another wild card. What if this is the game that the Bengals get it going on? It would make sense if it was….

NFL WEEK 9 PICKS

NFL WEEK 9 PICKS

So Joe was sober enough to show up to work this time but not enough to comment on all the games so I’ll fill in for his New England comment.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta

Joe Maass- Bucs- Freeman gets another 4th quarter comeback
Dr. Jamez- Falcons- I like how Tampa is playing but Raheem Morris is a douche bag and they’re going to get blown out for the third time by the third legit team they’ve played.

Miami at Baltimore

Joe Maass- Ravens- Ray Rice goes nuts
Dr. Jamez- Ravens- I’m not sure the Ravens can win this game

Chicago at Buffalo

Joe Maass- Bears- Really Buffalo probably should win
Dr. Jamez- Bears- Really Buffalo probably should win

New Orleans at Carolina

Joe Maass- Saints- Carolina is just bad
Dr. Jamez- Saints- and everyone knows how much I hate to do it.

New England at Cleveland

Joe Maass- Patriots-daddy loves Tommy’s long hair they should own, boom! –Joe Maass by way of Dr. Jamez
Dr. Jamez- Browns- Colt McCoy might be able to win this game.

N.Y. Jets at Detroit

Joe Maass- Jets- LT dominates
Dr. Jamez- Jets- this week seems like it will be filled with upsets and my picks will end up being 2-12

San Diego at Houston

Joe Maass- Chargers- Rivers owns that defense for 400+
Dr. Jamez- Texans- I don’t see how the chargers can win, Rivers will be the only qb this year that doesn’t torch this terrible pass defense

Arizona at Minnesota

Joe Maass- Vikings- Brett Favre just can’t stop
Dr. Jamez- Vikings- The Vikings will set a record for dead people on the field this year with Favre dying on the field and Percy Harvin who has been legally dead for 2 years.

N.Y. Giants at Seattle

Joe Maass- Giants- It’s gonna be a blood bath
Dr. Jamez- Giants- The Giants have ko’ed every qb they have played except Peyton, They got Hasslebeck before he even got on the field

Indianapolis at Philadelphia

Joe Maass- Colts- the Return of Vick
Dr. Jamez- Colts- Joe , remember when Tampa used to play Vick and sack him like 6 times in a game? Yeah our pass rushers are faster and better….

Kansas City at Oakland

Joe Maass- Raiders- ugh…..
Dr. Jamez- Chiefs – I don’t know what to make of this week….

Dallas at Green Bay

Joe Maass- Packers- Dallas is just sad…
Dr. Jamez- Packers- Thank god a easy to call game….. and a blow out.

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati

Joe Maass- Steelers- Big Ben all day
Dr. Jamez- Steelers- I’m not even totally sure about this one.

State of the NFC week 9

State of the NFC week 9
Joe Maass

This week features a game to decide first place in the NFC south between the Bucs and Falcons however this game shouldn’t impact the final standings of the NFC south. With the benching of McNabb still fresh the Redskins worked out former number 1 pick Jamarcus Russel. The Giants play at Seattle this weekend in a battle of division leaders but really leading the NFC west isn’t anything to write home about. Minnesota waived Randy Moss this week and was picked up by the Tennessee Titans. Does Lovie Smith get fired if his Chicago Bears notch Buffalo’s first win of the season? Buffalo has been pretty competitive the last few weeks and lost a couple game in overtime. Why are the Cowboys the NFC version of the Chargers? Always so much hype but they always fall short the season wasn’t looking good with Tony Romo at quarter back and Kitna isn’t getting it done. If I were Jerry Jones I’d call Jeff Garcia. Matthew Stafford returned from injury and threw four touchdown passes hopefully they can keep him from taking too many shots and keep him healthy. The Cardinals are going to with Derek Anderson at quarterback after Max Hall threw two interceptions for touchdowns this past weekend vs. the Bucs.

Injuries
• Rumor has it that Drew Brees is hurt but he claims the reports are false and he is practicing without a brace or sleeve on his knee.
• The Bucs starting center Jeff Faine and right tackle Jeremy Trueblood both will miss Sundays game..
• The Falcons get Daunta Robinson back this week
• Eagles wide receiver Desean Jackson has been cleared to play.

State of the AFC week 9

State of the AFC week 9
Dr. Jamez

This week the AFC saw the drama the NFL has come to call common place this season in full effect. We saw what I considered the best team in the NFL the Jets exposed on offense coming off a bye but an injury depleted Packers team. The Steelers who many others considered the best team in the NFL convincingly beat by a Saints team is coming off being blown out by the Browns. The one bit of stability we found is that Indianapolis is back in a familiar spot at sole ownership of first place in the AFC south coming off a domination of the Houston Texans on Monday night, But not with out a cost.

I’ll be upfront with you this is supposed to be a state of the whole AFC however like other times I’ve written it I’ve gotten a wave of bad news on the injury front for the Colts so I’ll spend most of my time lamenting that. News came in today that Clint Session the starting OLB suffered not only a dislocated elbow but wait for it…. That’s right a broken forearm first I have to give a lot of respect to the man for playing through that in a game that we desperately needed to win. The heart and selflessness he showed is what this team is defined by. Now that that’s said I really want to throw up, we had finally gotten Angerer, Session, and Bracket on the field at the same time which I felt would improve our run defense tremendously and for the most part did but with this news we’re back to where we were before at best. No official reports yet confirming or denying this thus no time table on how much time he will miss. That wasn’t the only thing on the Thursday injury avalanche, no not at all. Mike Hart who ran brilliantly on Monday hurt his ankle in someway that hasn’t been disclosed yet and was scheduled to have an MRI on it no official news yet but there’s nothing good about having an MRI and he hasn’t practiced for two days in a row. Not to be out done by someone in their first start, Anthony Gonzalez injured his knee on a dirty hit out of bounce by Houston’s crappy free safety and reports are that he’ll probably be gone for the rest of the year. But let’s even the bad news out on both sides of the ball Jerraud Powers did not participate for the second day in a row (he didn’t practice all last week either) with a foot injury. The one ray of hope in all off this is that Austen Collie was limited on Wednesday and fully participated on Thursday which is a godsend if he can play and Blair White can continue to return punts and play the fourth wide out. Other depressing news is Brodie Eldridge and Robert Mathis didn’t participate this week either but I think Mathis will play just with a knee brace. That’s that….. Thank god we still have Manning who will be starting his 200th consecutive game this Sunday versus the Philadelphia Eagles.

Keeping with the central theme of all things Indy this week Randy Moss was traded to back to the AFC and in to The Colts division to the second place Tennessee Titans. Time will tell how this effects the Colts, Titans and AFC as of now I don’t have a precise opinion on it yet.

RANDY MOSS TO THE TENNESSEE TITANS

RANDY MOSS TO THE TENNESSEE TITANS

That’s right something I think almost no one saw coming Randy Moss has been traded to the divisional rival of Dr. Jamez’s own Indianapolis Colts. On Wednesday afternoon the Titans Claimed Moss from waivers. The claim on Moss was necessitated by the Hamstring injury to the budding Kenny Britt who according to the team will be out “for an extended Period of time” This is a big time acquisition for the AFC south contending Titans who have been dynamic this year. The Titans will now have Moss for both match ups with the division leading Colts as well as both meetings with the leagues worst ranked pass defense the Houston Texans. Most certainly a big treat for Titans fan to talk about entering their bye.

-Dr. Jamez

Texans at Colts recap

Texans at Colts recap
17-30

This was the most important game of the season thus far and may very well be the most important game until we win the Superbowl this year. Going in to this game there were so many questions, issues and on my part full on worries. We’re seldom beat the same way but with the week one massacre of the run defense has kept me wake for 7 weeks. Beyond that The Colts decided the bye week was the best time to lose all our best players in the receiving game (except my boy Reggie Wayne, love that guy) losing Dallas Clark to the I.R., Austen Collie for 2-4 weeks, and Joseph Addai then unbeknownst to the fans we would also not have Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey Two of our starting corners.

The game starts off with a great defensive drive by the Colts to force a three and out which is exactly what the Colts needed because the lost the coin toss. Then the offense takes the field and I’m licking my chops thinking if we score here it’s all but over. The first play Manning to Tamme (who was replacing Clark) in the flat, point blank dropped pass. Play two same exact play except to Brodie Eldrige point blank drop….. then a incompletion on third and ten and the Colt start with a three and out at this point I’m hanging the rope and writing my note but then the Colts defense comes out and sends a message and sets a pace for the whole game starts with a Freeney sack and then another three and out. The Colt’s next drive Manning goes right back to Tamme except this time for a forty yard strike to put them in the green zone for the go ahead score. The next drive Kelvin Hayden Picks off Matt Schaub and takes it to the house for 6 with a fourteen to nothing start the Colts never looked back with a final score of thirty to seventeen.

Things worth mentioning beyond that, Mike Hart came in and true to the next man up philosophy had a great game with nearly 100 yards rushing a mile stone he most likely would have gotten had he not left the game in the fourth quarter. What would one of my columns be with out mention on Manning’s MVP performance? I’m not going to dole praise on him for his two touchdowns nor the fact he didn’t throw any interceptions in yet another game and is leading the league with a low of two interceptions. No, I’m recognizing him this time for two things you seldom see him do first his 15 yard scramble for a first down that would have made Archie proud I bring this up because it’s the first time in four years he’s ending a game with positive rush yardage. Next I think Peyton’s key block on a Defensive back to help Pierre Garcon get the first down on what was for sure the play of the week deserves to be mentioned as well. Over all great win that was crucial to the success of the team. Short week headed in to Philadelphia but hopefully headed to a Colt’s win I can highlight for you next week. GO COLTS!!!!!
Dr. Jamez

Bucs at Cardinals Recap

Bucs at Cardinals Recap
38-35 Bucs

It started ugly and finished just the same but in the end the Bucs stretch their road winning streak to 5 games (dating back to last season). It’s not often the Bucs put up 30+ points and they wouldn’t have Sunday without scores on defense. The Bucs and Cardinals scored three touchdowns on defense with the Bucs scoring twice on interception returns and the Cardinals once on a fumble. The Bucs took a seventeen point lead in the third quarter, from a LeGarrette Blount fifteen yard touchdown run, and looked to be in control of the game. The Bucs were then torched for twenty one unanswered points by the Cardinals before Josh Freeman was able to mount his fourth, fourth quarter comeback of the season. It did appear that after the Bucs took the lead the Cardinals with Derek Anderson at quarterback would have a shot to tie the game or take the lead. Aqib Talib (week 8 DPOW NFC) was able to jump a route and seal the game for the Bucs with his second interception of the game.

Player of the week Dr Jamez edition

Player of the week Dr Jamez edition

AFC

Offense- Jason Campbell- 15/27, 310 Yards, 2 Touchdowns, 0 Interceptions

I like Jason Campbell, sure these are super star numbers but he played well and won against a decent team. This may be the only chance he’ll have to get it all year so I’m giving it to him. Jason Campbell on the pass!

Defense- Dwight Freeney- 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble

There weren’t a lot of stellar defensive performances in the AFC this week but this was certainly a stand out two sacks, three hurries, and a forced fumble to seal the game in the red zone. Perhaps this is they type of play we all take for granted because he and Mathis do it so often but It took a total team effort to win this game and that’s what they got. Two chest pounds and a salute.
